Summer, 2025
Although the summer season is traditionally associated with holidays and rest, the international team of the project continues its active work. This collaborative initiative focuses on developing innovative resources for English language education in nursing and healthcare.
The overarching aim of the project is to update and modernize the BA course English for Nursing and Healthcare, to design an interactive book for nursing professionals, and to provide opportunities for English language professional development for in-service nurses. These efforts directly respond to the increasing need for high-quality communication in English within international healthcare environments, where effective interaction often plays a decisive role in patient safety, trust, and overall care quality.
During the summer months, despite academic breaks, the partners have been engaged in several important activities. In June and July, the consortium members discussed the framework of the updated English course, identified its main sections and units, and considered the types of materials that would be most beneficial for nursing students. At this stage, a strong emphasis was placed on ensuring that course design reflects the real professional needs of future and practicing nurses.
In July and early August, work shifted towards defining the general and specific learning objectives of the course. This process included a detailed review of the competencies that nursing students and healthcare professionals require in their daily work when communicating with patients, colleagues, and international medical teams. By outlining these objectives, the project partners ensure that the course will not only provide language knowledge but also foster practical communication skills relevant to healthcare contexts.
On 13 August 2025, the partners held yet another online meeting to refine the learning objectives of 3 units and to prepare a plan of action for the upcoming weeks. This meeting allowed the consortium to align approaches across institutions and to ensure consistency in the development of teaching and learning materials.
At the same time, the project team continues to gather data from surveys among nursing students and practicing nurses in Estonia, Slovenia, Croatia, and Ukraine. These surveys are essential for identifying the actual educational needs of learners and professionals. The results will guide the development of teaching content and guarantee that the final materials will be both practical and highly relevant to the nursing profession.
